Top 5 Items to Bring When Visiting China

April 18, 2016Jet SetterNo commentsGenevieve

Ah, China. Land of dragons, Mooshoo pork, and Disney’s Mulan.

Just kidding!

China is so much more – history, great food, and natural beauty. And while cities like Shanghai and Beijing are the epitome of East-meets-West opulence, there’s no doubt you’ll want to be prepared for what awaits you.  Here are my top 5 items to bring!

    1. Packets of tissues and Hand Sanitizer. Large boxes of tissues are free to use if they’re already open on the table, but there will be a charge for new packets. They’re pretty cheap so don’t fret about the charge, but always better to come prepared! Also, restrooms often do not have toilet paper. Also, restrooms often do not have soap. ‘Nuff said.
    2. Cash. Not all places accept credit card, and you’ll want to avoid bank fees. If you’re uncomfortable with large amounts of cash, check out cell payments like WeChat Wallet. Otherwise bring small notes for public transit and snacks. Those delicious, delicious snacks…
    3. Non Google/Facebook things. You’ll be surprised how integrated these platforms have become in our lives. Download a new browser, set up a Hotmail or Yahoo email, and get your social media fill before you leave. Need a map? BaiDu or Gao De are the maps of choice, but require internet. I’ve never used Gao De, but I’ve been told by users there’s an English version available.
    4. Short-ish Bottoms. Are your bottoms JUST trailing the ground? DANGER ZONE! At some point you’ll need a public restroom, and trust me, you do NOT want to let your pants touch that floor. Capri pants or leggings are an excellent choice, and don’t forget that packet of tissues!  Here are two of our favourite RC capris…flocapri2flocapri
    5. Big Stomach EAT EVERYTHING! Chinese food is diverse and delicious, from local restaurants to Western chains that often feature a Chinese twist to their menu. Be careful of street markets or food stalls. Water should be boiling and hazardous foods (eggs, poultry, minced meats, tofu, etc) should be kept in controlled temperatures. Got an iron stomach? …I still don’t recommend it.

McDonald’s Fried Chicken. Spicy, bone in, only available in Asia! I have it every time I visit. It’s THAT GOOD.

china2

Northern China hot pot, with Northern China Lamb – aka Number One Lamb, according to our server.

Have you been China before? What is YOUR top item that you recommend travelling with?

-Flo
