Our nation’s capital is a beautiful place to visit anytime of the year. It is perfect for a romantic getaway or a weekend away with the girls. The city is full of rich history and fun activities to do year round. Everyone must go to Ottawa at least once in their life! Here are our favourites things to do in Ottawa…
The canal is certainly one of the things that Ottawa is known for. It is 202 kilometres long and is the largest naturally frozen skating rink in the world (as designated by Guinness World Records). During the Winter (January/February) you can skate down 7.8 kilometres of it and take in the beautiful sights of downtown Ottawa. The best part? It’s free! Unless you have to rent skates of course. Also, you MUST get a beaver tail…it’s a necessity! Beaver tails are delicious pastry treats that Ottawa is known for. If you are visiting during the Summer, you can walk along the canal or take a boat ride. Fear not…there’s a beaver tail stand in the Byward Market (see below) year round in case you can’t get one while skating.
An important part of Canadian heritage that every Canadian must see at least once. You can take a guided tour or just walk around the grounds on your own. Who knows…you may even spot our Prime Minister walking by!
This museum contains reknowned works of art with everything from contemporary art, Canadian art, mixed media art, and much more. You’ve gotta take a picture under the giant spider outside of it!
History enthusiasts, this is the place for you. Learn about the military history of Canada and the stories behind it. The building itself is beautiful as well!
The market is a must see when you are downtown! Even president Obama himself has stopped by in the past (no really…there’s an “Obama Cookie” that you can buy at one of the shops there). There are plenty of unique boutiques around the market that you won’t find anywhere else as well as tons of great restaurant choices (we recommend Blue Cactus or Tuckers Marketplace!). On certain days they also have outdoor vendors which is always a treat to walk around and see.
The Rideau Centre is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa. It’s a gigantic mall that is home to many popular stores, such as Nordstrom, and a newly renovated food court.
On July 1st Ottawa turns into a giant party city! There are street performers and vendors all around downtown as well as musical performances and fireworks on Parliament Hill at night. Past musical performances have included Canadian acts such as Nelly Furtado and Simple Plan. It’s completely free too! Except for the food and drinks of course. This is the best day to be in Ottawa and the atmosphere is definitely contagious.
