RUNNING LATE?! Holiday Parties & Potlucks…Planning Tips.

November 16, 2016Family First, GeneralNo commentsAnnMarie Falbo

Sometimes the universe is against you when you’re running late. Whether it’s a night out with family and friends or a holiday potluck, somehow time just slips away until you’re standing in your bathrobe with wet hair and 15 minutes to go. Let the mad dash begin!

  1. The Best Laid Plans. Make a list, even if it’s just a mental one. Think about what needs to be done and in what order.
  2. Last Minute Dash. If you need to pick up a few things, think of one store that has it all and make only one stop, even if you have to spend a few extra bucks. Think about it – would you pay someone $10 RIGHT NOW to alleviate this stress? Yes? Then make one convenient stop and think of all that time and hassle you’ve saved.
  3. Keep’n It Simple! Ditch that new printed skirt that needs just the right top to match, and go for a basic black tunic and leggings. Then grab an assortment of accessories and decide in the car. Christmas potluck? Festive earrings and a long, glittering necklace are a must. Girls’ night out? A bright scarf, hoops, and a swipe of red lipstick is all you need…and don’t forget to push up those sleeves!
  4. Potluck Cheats. Are you about two seconds away from bringing a box of uncooked mac n’ cheese? My mother taught me the value of turning recognizable freezer favourites into mouth-watering creations. See the blog post here. Let things cook while you finish that makeup!
  5. Choose Your Shoes…Later! Running late is much less fun in heels! Pack your dancing shoes and switch once you get to your destination, especially if you’re walking, taking public transit, or anticipate parking far away.  Be sure to have a cute bag to house your shoes while you’re partying, and don’t forget the socks (if needed)!
  6. Can You Do That In The Car? You’ll be much more composed once you’re there, so do the final touches once you arrive at your destination. These are things like changing your purse, deciding on which shoes to wear, etc. The purse question always looms once I’m at the door, searching for my keys. Instead of a hurried bag dump, I bring the whole thing and transfer what I need once I get to the venue. That way I’m sure not to leave anything at home.
  7. Let Them Know! A quick text will take no time at all and will be very much appreciated. Rolling start times for potlucks are common, but if your host has a plan he or she will probably like to know your actual ETA to plan accordingly. Plus it’s just polite to let them know you’ll be late.
  8. Get Your Waze On! Think you know the way? Are you sure? No?…Then take out that GPS and start navigating because there’s nothing more frustrating than adding 15 min to your delay because of a detour you didn’t know was there. Absolute worst!!
  9. Take A Deep Breath. It’s meant to be fun! After all…you’re here, you look fabulous, and you’re probably famished from stressing your calories away! Enjoy yourself, and remember to promise yourself extra time for the next party.

Do you have any tips for the Mad Dash? Let us hear about it! We’d all be incredibly grateful.
